Billboard Liberation Front & Anthony Campanale for President 2000

(November 5, 2000 — San Francisco) The Billboard Liberation Front, perched barefoot on the cutting edge where Art, Advertising and Law Enforcement meet is proud to announce a New! Fresh!! concept in Outdoor Advertising. After resting on our laurels and reclining on our duffs for a year we’ve dusted off our coveralls, dug out the climbing gear and hit the Big Boards once again. The BLF, always staunch supporters of the arts and keen purveyors of advertising have found a way to merge the two in a unique, compelling fashion. We call our new service: “ARTVERTISING”.

This service is one of sub-contracting installations of original canvas art by artists who want to display LARGE PALATE pieces for the general public (or who we owe money to). The Artist makes his/her original canvas and the BLF installs it! The art commodities business being what it is, we believe that our unique service will be very popular with emerging Artists who are not yet optimizing their sales potential. The Artist who uses our ARTVERTISING service is guaranteed that at least 4000 people a day will see their artwork! Just try to get those numbers at Hansen or Kinkade Galleries! ARTVERTISING will put the artist on the map, poised to make the Big Bucks with their work!

We are very proud to announce that the first Artist to subscribe to our ARTVERTISING service is local Art star and presidential candidate, Anthony Campanale. Mr. Campanales F.B.I. file describes him as a Bay Area Artist of minor importance! Mr. Campanale (Tony to his friends) is well known for several San Francisco installations including: “Exploit and Abuse” an art/action where he and associates placed a diving board on the center span of the Golden Gate Bridge, and: “Black Tuesday” where Tony built a solid concrete bed and placed it in front of the Pacific Stock Exchange on the anniversary of the ’29 stock collapse (a hard landing – literally and metaphorically speaking for the hundreds of brokers who leaped to their deaths after the collapse).

Tony’s new piece is a self portrait and campaign pitch for the Campanale for President campaign. “Anthony Campanale for President…..a buttload of time….a pocketful of change!”

You can see this piece (if it’s still up!) on the billboard in the NW corner of the abandoned lot at the intersection of PINE & KEARNY in S.F.

Founded by a cabal of eccentric advertising professionals, the Billboard Liberation Front has pursued its mission of improving outdoor advertising worldwide since 1977. Major campaigns have augmented the promotions of Exxon, R.J. Reynolds, Apple, Levi and many other Fortune 500 companies.
